“ Pen Picture of Edgil “
He was of medium build; you couldn’t find an ounce of fat on his body. He had a strong character; a stern, no non-sense attitude. He never bothered to relax; every minute was made busy, As well he expected the same from everyone else.
For him, there was always a job to do. Nothing had a completed point. He was always looking to make it better or improve. He would decide in a minute to remove a wall and put in an archway in the middle of a room. It was a standard joke, he would grab a chain saw and start carving. End results, an improvement.
He was more than a carpenter, ( his God given trade ). He was an architect , designer, creator, improviser. He demanded perfection. If a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right, nothing else acceptable.
And today as I observe his children, I see this inherited trait, perhaps the more visible one.
Occupation: well. . . . . carpenter, master plumber, electrician, mechanic, painter, and brick mason. No formal training or schooling, just self taught by good common sense. He designed a acetylene cutting torch, run by a combination of oxygen and gas. He never patented his design, but, he made it useful in his work. He made many things useful by using it for different purposes than maybe what it was intended for. Something else inherited by his off-springs.
I had heard him remark, “ their was Indian in his bloodline.” Although in our research as far back as his great, great grand-father, John Johnston, we have not been able to link it up.
His mother, Dorothy’s ancestry would also indicate these characteristics, especially with the Skidmore’s., Dorothy’s mother Susan was a Skidmore. We shall continue to look for the Indian bloodline in further research.
The family, of Edgil and Bea lived at Peterson Siding, Lewis Co., West Virginia the early years. At one point lived at Camp Damson near Rowlesburg, West Virginia. But most of the kids growing up years were at 250 Arnold Street, Weston, West Virginia. Edgil, worked for the Weston Steam Laundry and Dry Cleaners.
The kids married, and over the years moved in all directions.
In later years when living in Virginia, Edgil worked as a carpenter for construction companies in building housing developments, mostly as a finishing carpenter. He would say,” his job was making everyone else’s mistakes look good”.
At his death, at the age of 69, in 1980 Edgil and Bea resided in Springfield, Virginia. He had cancer causing a lingering illness. He had lost his brother “ Buck “ and his Father Floyd to cancer also.
Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Weston, Lewis, Co..

Addie Beatrice ( Gay ) Johnson
Addie Beatrice Gay was born December 10, 1910, in Lewis County, West Virginia. The daughter of George M. And Lucinda ( Freeman ) Gay. She was the fourth in line of eight children; Iva Elizabeth, her oldest sister and first born, married John Wesley Wolfe, 1st marriage and Harry “ Red “ Smith, 2nd marriage.; Georgia Ersle, married Thomas Marshall Scarf; Letha, married Henry Duncan; Bea married Edgil; Charles Presley “ Ted “, married Dorthy Blanche Lutz,; Samuel Edward “ Ed “, married Ruby Glenna Dennison; Adrian Lewis, married Geraldine M. Waggoner; Leonard Miles, married Sarah Jane Brown, 1st Marriage. After Sarah’s death; Leonard’s 2nd marriage, to Mary.
Addie Beatrice Gay; she was of small build, dainty and neat. She was quiet and easy going. Perhaps to much so. She worked very hard to keep a neat and orderly home. Everything always appeared in place and was. That’s how she ran her “ ship “.
She never seemed to become unraveled at anyone’s expense. Angry . . . ? I would imagine, but, I can’t say I ever saw her angry. Although, the trials and troubles of some of the mischief and problems the off-springs created would certainly try her patience that’s for sure. She would tell many tales about the kids getting into mischief, and laugh a lot as she related these stories, especially about, Eldon. Mainly because his antics were most daring.
Bea’s family of brothers and sisters are all deceased but for two brothers, "Ed ", and Leonard.
They are of English ancestry; similar features, characteristics and personalities. Light hair, light complexion, small structural build, easy going and soft spoken.
The resemblance of " Bea " the mother is striking in her children as they grow older.
She is greatly missed and long remembered. I feel sad at times to realize that many of the grand-children and great grand-children were not able to have at least had some experience in knowing her.
"Bea ", died January 27,1988
at the age of 78, of an extended illness. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial
Gardens, Weston. Lewis Co., West Virginia.
