I do not know to much about Floyd and Dorthy, for when I first knew them they were living on Old Woman’s Run. I do not know where they lived before then. That was in June 1952, and Floyd was working as janitor at the Braxton County courthouse in Sutton then. He retired from there in January of 1957 and died April 2, 1957. Dorthy, told me he was carrying the mail when Burnell was born and had been away from home a day or two when, Burnell, was born. When Floyd, heard he was born and him gone he fainted. Dorthy, always got a laugh out of it when she talked about it. As far as any other jobs he had, I do not know about. But, I think he worked at the courthouse for several years.
Burnell, was born in Sutton, West Virginia, on January 2, 1922. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 16, 1942, at the court house in Sutton, Wva. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945 at the Seperation center at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He served in the European Theater in the battle of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. He received the Good Conduct medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Bronze Star Medal. I have certificates showing after being in the service, he completed courses in “Business Management for International Harvester, a welding school in Ohio, and finished a course at Mergenthaler Linotype School in New York for linotype machinists.” Before we were married he was a partner with his brother, “Buck”, in a Body and Paint Shop at Two Runs, just above Clay, West Virginia. And also a partner in the Clay County Free Press for a while, but, I do not know these exact dates. I only know for sure that he sold his interest in the Clay Free Press in 1954.
After we were married in June 19, !954, Burnell had a book binding business for a short while in Sutton, until he bought the Grantsville News and we moved to Grantsville in 1954. We had a printing shop, book binding and the newspaper combined under his company name of Grantsville Printing and Binding Company, Grantsville, Wva. until 1959. In January 1960, he was employed as machinist for the Waynesburg Daily Newspaper and was a Mechanical superintendent for the plant. Due to health reasons, he left Waynesburg, Pa., in 1964 and was employed at the State Record in Columbus, South Carolina, for about a year and a half. We than moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was employed 16 years at the Charlotte Observer as machinist, in the composing room, and special color ad setter. He retired on disability in July of 1984, and passed away on November 28, 1985, on Thanksgiving Day of an acute myocardial infraction. He was buried in Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, North Carolina. His hobbies included repairing small engine, fishing and restoring vintage Sunbeam cars. He had completely restored three Sunbeam before his death.

- nurse, doctor, quite an occupation,
beyond “ housewife “.Different from today ? In some ways still the same.
