Elizabeth “Lizzy” [Rennie] Durand

Lizzy, was a young woman when she left her home on Steer Creek, Gilmer Co., West Virginia where she was raised, and went to Montana. There were families relocating to this area to work in the timber cutting business.

Joe Whistman, a timber man by occupation was married to Mamie (Cook), a school teacher. He acquired land in Montana, possibly by a land grant. The land had an abundance of standing timber of white pine. The Whistman’s took saw mill and all it’s equipment as well as oxen, household goods, etc.

Lizzy, was to go along to help them just for a year. They paying for her travel back home after the year was up.

But, after the year was up, Lizzy, choose to remain in Montana. She had grown fond of the state of Montana. And in Montana is where Lizzy, met and married Oscar Durand.

Oscar, was a full blooded Indian, of the Cherokee Nation. He surely was a handsome man, it is told. Tall and straight with black hair and deep blue eyes.

In those days the travel across the country was quite a chore. And from Montana to Gilmer County in West Virginia an ordeal not often undertaken.

In 1913, Lizzy, made the trip home to visit her family on Steer Creek, Gilmer County. This was about a year before her father, Alex, died. She returned to Montana after a long visit.

Again, in the year of 1921, Lizzy and Oscar came by train. They came in at the rail head at the Bower, West Virginia station. Then they were brought by wagon to Dusk Camp, Gilmer County to her sisters home, Myrtle and Austin Posts. Who in turn transported them on to the Steer Creek community to visit her family, Caroline Rennie. They returned to Montana once again.

______________ another visit when Milton was about 5 years old
______________ and again when Frankie was about 5 years old.
______________ she visited Florida where sister Mabel lived.

But, several years passed, before she made her last visit in 1967.
This was the year all five sisters were able to get together at one place. This being the old home place of the eldest sisiter Myrtle Post, on Dusk Camp.
                     Myrtle        was 84 years
                     Jennie        was 82 years
                     Lizzy          was 81 years
                     Essie          was 79 years
                     Mabel        was 67 years
{There was 17 years between Myrtle, the eldest and Mabel, the youngest}

Lizzy, died twelve years after her last visit. She was the first one of the five surviving sisters to die, at the age of 93.

Lizzy and Oscar, made their home for many of their last years in Spokane, Washington. After Oscar died, Lizzy, made the move to Amatella, Oregon.

Milton and Jeanne, live in Amatella, Oregon; Frankie, lives in Sunnyville, California.
