Caroline Catherine “Katie” Rommetsch
Caroline, was the fifth born to Jacob and Louisa (Smith) Rommetsch, and the fourth daughter. She was born on Steer Creek, Gilmer Co., (western) Virginia, November 24, 1856. She married Alexander Rennie, the son of William and Elizabeth (Addie) Rennie, on October 16,1882 in Lewis County, West Virginia. Alexander “Alex”, was born in Scotland.
They met while both were employed at the Lunatic Asylum in Weston, Lewis Co., West Virginia. After Caroline and Alex were married, they came to live in Gilmer County and moved into the Rommetsch home to care for Carolin’s father, Jacob.
Katie and Alex , were parents of seven childrenn. All were born in the Rommetsch house on Steer Creek and grew up in the home. Each leaving upon marriage.
Alex, was a farmer. He died on August 28, 1914 at the age of sixty-eight (68) and four months. Interment in the ROMMETSCH / RENNIE Cemetery, on Steer Creek that was established on the Rommetsch property.
Caroline, died Februar 27, 1944 at the age of eighty-seven (87) years. At the time she lived in the home of her youngest daughter, Mabel Agnes (Rennie), (Brown), Wells, in Zanesville, Ohio. Cause of death was a heart attack. Interment, the Rommetsch / Rennie Cemetery, Steer Creek, Gilmer Co., West Virginia.

Lizzy, was a young woman when she left her home on Steer Creek, Gilmer Co., West Virginia where she was raised, and went to Montana. There were families relocating to this area to work in the timber cutting business.
Joe Whistman, a timber man by occupation was married to Mamie (Cook), a school teacher. He acquired land in Montana, possibly by a land grant. The land had an abundance of standing timber of white pine. The Whistman’s took saw mill and all it’s equipment as well as oxen, household goods, etc.
Lizzy, was to go along to help them just for a year. They paying for her travel back home after the year was up.
But, after the year was up, Lizzy, choose to remain in Montana. She had grown fond of the state of Montana. And in Montana is where Lizzy, met and married Oscar Durand.
Oscar, was a full blooded Indian, of the Cherokee Nation. He surely was a handsome man, it is told. Tall and straight with black hair and deep blue eyes.
In those days the travel across the country was quite a chore. And from Montana to Gilmer County in West Virginia an ordeal not often undertaken.
In 1913, Lizzy, made the trip home to visit her family on Steer Creek, Gilmer County. This was about a year before her father, Alex, died. She returned to Montana after a long visit.
Again, in the year of 1921, Lizzy and Oscar came by train. They came in at the rail head at the Bower, West Virginia station. Then they were brought by wagon to Dusk Camp, Gilmer County to her sisters home, Myrtle and Austin Posts. Who in turn transported them on to the Steer Creek community to visit her family, Caroline Rennie. They returned to Montana once again.

______________ and again when Frankie was about 5 years old.
______________ she visited Florida where sister Mabel lived.
But, several years passed, before she made her last visit in 1967.
This was the year all five sisters were able to get together at one place.
This being the old home place of the eldest sisiter Myrtle Post, on Dusk
Camp.
Myrtle was 84 years
Jennie was 82 years
Lizzy was 81 years
Essie was 79 years
Mabel was 67 years
{There was 17 years between Myrtle, the eldest and Mabel,
the youngest}
Lizzy, died twelve years after her last visit. She was the first one of the five surviving sisters to die, at the age of 93.
Lizzy and Oscar, made their home for many of their last years in Spokane, Washington. After Oscar died, Lizzy, made the move to Amatella, Oregon.
Milton and Jeanne, live in Amatella, Oregon; Frankie, lives in Sunnyville, California.

Bernard Glen Bennett, was born in Gassaway, Braxton Co., West Virginia. He resided at Westover, West Virginia near Morgantown. On retirement resided at Tampa, Florida; Until retirement, he was manager of the Coastal Tank Liners in Westover for 31 yers; A memeber of the Westover Methodist Church, and a mmeber of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 10
He served three terms as a member of the Westover City Concil and was a charter member of the Westover Community Association and a Little League baseball field in Westover bears his name, in recogination for his many years of community service to youth. He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was also a past president of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association.
Interment in the Sutton Cemetery, Sutton, West Virginia.

Glodie (Moore) Bennett, was the daughter of Grover C. and Estella Moore. She was amember of Forest Hills United Methodist Church and the Forest Hills American Association of Retired Persons in Tampa, Florida.; Ladies of the Orient, Morgantown; Harmony Rebekiah Lodge No. 51 and a former member of the Westover Womans Club in Westover, west Virginia.
Interment in the Sutton Cemetery, Sutton, West Virginia.

Bernice Leona Bennett, attended Davis Grade School at Gasaway, West Virginia; graduated from Gassaway High School in 1931. She was a member of the Gassaway Baptist Church and taught a Sunday school class for years.
Bernice and Henry, lived at Dunbar, West Virginia, then moved to Grafton, West Viginia. From there to Youngstown, Ohio.
Due to complications following a major surgical operation, Bernice, died at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Yongstown, Ohio.
Bernice, was held in great regard by the members of the community
of Gassaway, her home town.
Interment in the Beals Mills Cemetery, Gassaway, West Virginia.

Bonnitta Louise Bennett and Everett Alvin Thomas, were married in Zanesville, Ohio. They lived several years in Charleston, West Virginia. Later years in Tampa Florida.
She was a member of the Forrest Lawn Nazerene Church of Tampa, Florida; also attended the Free Baptist Church where she had many friends.
She was preceeded in death by her father and mother and four brothers, Bernard, William, Wallace, and Harold Lee, and one sister, Bernice.
She passed away at her home at 3:25 A.M. February 22, 1995 Funeral services were in the F.T. Blunt Nebraska Ave. Chapel, Tampa, Fla. Interment in the Sunset Memorial Garden, Tampa, Florida.
Bonnitta was survived by one brother in 1995, Blair Alexander “Dick”.

William Issac Bennett, faught in the War of 1812. He was given a tract of land on the left fork of Ster Creek, in Gilmer County, (western) Virginia. Have not located his wife and only son, Capt. William Bennett, b. 12/7/1818 / d. 1902
The Bennett post office was named for William Issac Bennett. Capt. Bennett, a civil war veterian inherited his father’s land and added other tracts of land. He owned over 1920 acres of land along Steer Creek at his death.

Both are buried in Mount Carmel cemetery, adjucant to
the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, founded by the Bennetts. Capt. Bennett
gave $300 to build a church building.

Interment in the Rommetsch/Rennie Cemetery Steer Creek, Gilmer County, West Virginia
Willie, died at the age of twenty-seven, due to an accident earlier to
his head. As a result, he was subjected to having epileptic seizures which
as he grew older became progressively worse. They could not care for him
at home ________ he was taken to the Home For The Incurable, in Huntington,
West Virginia. He died in the institution,
never returning home.
