William Rennie, born 1823, Edinburgh, Scotland

Elizabeth Addie, born 1825, in Edinburgh, Scotland

William, came to America ca 1849, to work in the underground coal mines. His ship sailed in to New York Harbor. They traveled on to Pennsylvania, settling in what then was called Muddy Branch. William, wife Elizabeth and the oldest child, a daughter, Elizabeth, born March 7, 1844, in Glasgow, Scotland; second child, a son, Alexander, born April 16, 1846, in Glasgow, Scotland; third born, a daughter, Agnes, born June 4, 1848, Glasgow, Scotland. The ship sailed for three months on the Atlantic Ocean to get them to America, away from their war scared home land.

They settled for a time in Pennsylvania, two sons were born at Muddy Branch, near Schuylkill,  James and David.

They moved on, traveling westward across Pennsylvania. crossing the Blue Mountains, the Susquehanna River, south westward to the Mononghalia River, following this river south to the area now called Fairmont, West Virginia. They found work once again in the under ground coal mines.

They lived here for several years in a one room log cabin. As soon as the children got old enough, they each took their place down in the mines. All but the two youngest sons, Robert and Richard. They both worked for the rail road. Robert, was killed in a train accident, when he was very young.

William, enlisted in 1861 in the 3rd. West Virginia Infantry, Company B, and saw some hard fighting in the Virginia Valley at the battles of Cross Keep and McDowell. He was discharged for disability at Fort McHenry, in 1863, and then came back to live in Marion County, West Virginia. There he engaged in practical mining and worked as mine superintendent.

William, died November 4, 1890 at the age of sixty-seven (67).
Elizabeth, died May 4, 1899 at the age of seventy-four (74).

Alexander, enlisted for the Civil War, and served two years. He fought for his adopted country in the war between the states, serving in the 17th. West Virginia Infantry, Company C, through the last year of the war. He received his honorable discharge at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.

    Alexander, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of William and Elizabeth (Addie) Rennie. He came to America while he was still a young boy. He and his family lived for several years in or near Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, later relocating in (western) Virginia, known now as Fairmont in Marion County. They all worked in underground coal mining in Pennsylvania, and continued in coal mining in Marion County. Alex, fought in the war between the states, Civil War. Serving with the 17th. West Virginia Infantry, Co. C, through the last year of that war. Receiving an honorable discharge at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.

    Alex, was a skilled machinist and acquired a position in Weston, Lewis County, West Virginia at the State Lunatic Asylum. He met his bride Caroline Catherine Rommetsch at this establishment, where she was also employed in the laundry.

    Caroline Catherine Rommetsch, the daughter of Jacob F. and Louisa C. (Smith) Rommetsch, born in Center District, Gilmer County, West Virginia..

    Alex and Caroline, were married in Lewis County, West Virginia, October 16, 1882.

    After their marriage, they came to the Rommetsch home in Gilmer County community of Steer Creek, to care for Caroline’s ailing father. Caroline’s mother, Louisa, had died in 1865 at the age of 39. The year Alex and Caroline were married (1882), two sisters and a brother died of typhoid fever epidemic. Virginia, age twenty-two; Lucy, age twenty; Christian Mathias, age twenty-eight. Christian, was to marry a Gerwig girl on the day of his death.

    Alex and Caroline, were the parents of seven children; MYRTLE MAUDE RENNIE, [MRS. AUSTIN POST]; JENNIE GAY RENNIE, [MRS. CLAUDE NORMAN]; Elizabeth ROCENA RENNIE; [MRS. OSCAR DURAND];ESSIE BLANCH RENNIE; [MRS. RAY BENNETT]; JAMES WILLIAM RENNIE; ROBERT LEE RENNIE; MABEL AGNES RENNIE; [MRS. ELDON BROWN, 1st. Marriage/ MRS. HOMER WELLS, 2nd. Marriage}.

    Alex and Caroline cared for Jacob, her father and reared their family in the Rommetsch home. Alex, was a farmer and Caroline a home maker. Caroline, was known as “Katie” by her family and friends.

    Alex, died August 28, 1914 of asthma at the age of sixty-eight (68) years and four (4) months. “Katie”, remained in the old Rommetsch home for awhile and then moved to

    Buckhannon, Upshur County, West Virginia. She made visits to her daughters homes frequently.

    Caroline, “Katie”, died at the age of eighty-seven (87) years, February 27, 1944. She at that time made her home with her youngest daughter, Mabel Agnes, (Mrs. Homer Wells) of Zanesville, Ohio Alex and Caroline, interment is the ROMMETSCH CEMETERY, Steer Creek, Gilmer County, West Virginia.

JAMES RENNIE, married Ellen Wilmouth
                              Two children: ROBERT and ISABEL

    Robert Rennie, Sr., son of James and Ellen (Wilmouth) Rennie, died at age (73); he lived at 317 Haymond St., Fairmont, West Virginia. He had been in failing health for several years.

       Robert Rennie, Sr., married Lilly Henderson, of Fairmont, West Virginia.
         Two children: Robert Rennie, Jr., Sylvia Rennie
         Robert Rennie, Sr., grand-children; JOHN, LINDA, REBECCA
         Robert, Jr., lived at 402 Haymond St., Fairmont, West Virginia
         Sylvia Rennie, married, Delbert Hershman, of Phillippi, West Virginia

         Robert, Sr., retired from The B&O Railroad. He worked as a clerk and a caller; was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks and also of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. A member of the Diamond Street Methodist Church and Bible Class.

JANE R. RENNIE, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Addie) Rennie
         Born: April 28, 1858, Fairmont, West Virginia
         Married: Joseph W. Anthony
         Died: December 29, 1957, age [99] at the home of her daughter, Maria Knapp, of
         Roselle, New Jersey

         Jane and Joseph, had two daughters; Maria (Anthony) Knapp, of Roselle, New Jersey
         and Helen (Anthony) Brooks, of Dayton, Ohio.

         Jane and Joseph, had ten grand-children, thirteen great-grand-children, and one great-great- grand-child. Jane and Joseph, are buried in Valhalla Burial Park, Staton Island, New York. Jane’s wish was cremation. - incineration Rosehill Crematory, Linden, New Jersey.

Gavin Addie Rennie, “Uncle Guy”, was the eighth child born to William and Elizabeth (Addie) Rennie. Born in Marion County, West Virginia, July 4th., 1860.

Everyone knew him by “Guy”. He never married.

         “Guy”, came to Gilmer County from Marion County in 1900, and made his home with his older brother , Alexander Rennie, and his family on Steer Creek. In 1915 he moved to Buckhannon, West Virginia to work at Wesleyan College. He was a learned master carpenter and painter. He worked for the College for several years. He retired in 1939 and there after made his home with a niece, the daughter of Alex and “Katie”, MYRTLE MAUDE
(RENNIE) POST, of Stouts Mills, Gilmer County, West Virginia
         Uncle “Guy”, died July 9, 1943 of complications incident to advanced age, he was eighty-three (83) years old.
         Last rites were conducted by the Rev. T.R. Rector, at the Rommetsch Chapel, Steer Creek. Interment in the Rommetsch Family Cemetery, Steer Creek, Gilmer County, West Virginia.

Isabel Rennie, the tenth born unto the union of William and Elizabeth (Addie) Rennie.
Born October 21, 1865, in Marion County, West Virginia.
         Married: Samuel Alonzo Boehm, April 14, 1892

         Lived in Fairmont, West Virginia at 18 Outlook Road. Samuel, was associated with the Fairmont Grain and Milling Company. They had three daughters; Mrs. Richard L. Mealand of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Louis Boehm, of Butler, New   Jersey, and Mrs. Charles F. McLane of 18 Outlook Road, Fairmont, West Virginia. Two sons; George Samuel Boehm, Hugh Boehm. At the time of Isabel’s death, there was one grand-daughter, Mrs. Scott Leavitt, one grand-son, Phillip McLane, one great-grand-daughter, Antonia Leavitt..Isabelle, was ninty-two years old and lived at the Walnut Avenue Nursing Home, in Fairmont. The Rev. Frank C. Marvin and Rev. Robert P. Atkinson, conducted the services and interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Fairmont, west Virginia.

         George Samuel Boehm, son of Isabelle and Samuel
         Born: October 5, 1897, Glover Gap, west Virginia, married Margaret Barr, of Fairmont, west Virginia..
        Lived at 30 Oakwood Road, Fairmont, West Virginia. Died November 21, 1960.

         George, was a mining engineer for Bethleham Mines Corp.. He had been with Bethleham for more than forty years. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, A.F. and A Masons Lodge No. 9, Fairmont Lodge 294, B.P.O. Elks, and the American legion, Post 17. He was a veterian of World War I.

         George Samuel, was sixty-three years old. Services were conducted by Rev. Frank C. Marvin, Jr., Interment in the Woodlawn cemetery, Fairmont, West Virginia. Full military rites were conducted.
