Dara Whistman Post

Dara Whistman uncle Walter's second wife was the daughter of “Dock” Whistman and Lillie (Beane) Whistman. She was the sister of Floyd Beane, Cora (Beane) Norman, and had twin brothers Robert and William Beane. “Dock” Whistman came from Kentucky to Steer Creek. He was said to be the “seventh son of the seventh son.” People believed that made him a “healer” so they called him “Dock” Whistman. They came here to Steer Creek very early in their lives and here remained to live out their lives.

Walter Willis Post
* MY UNCLE WALTER *

     Uncle Walter was a special person to me. He was a kind soft speaking person I learned to love and trust when I was very small girl. The picture is impressed on my mind, of a tall neatly dressed man, riding a beautiful well groomed , English saddle horse. His shinny saddle, with breast straps and Martin Gales and elaborate bridle, all trimmed with rings and loops of many colors. How like an Arabian Knight he seemed to me in a child’s eye view of things. He always had time to toss me in the saddle to take a ride on his beautiful horse.

     I remember many times finding myself quickly perched on his shoulder to go with him some place, my short legs couldn’t have kept up to his big, long steps. Often, it has come to mind what a fine father he would have been if he had children of his own.

     I guess, one could say raising horses was his hobby. Besides riding horses, he also raised draft horses and trained them. He was a very kind man to animals and his big blaze faced soil team would follow his command instantly. I remember he had one team trained to kneel to one knee. Then raised both feet off the ground at once and move forward smooth and together perfectly with the wagon.

     I really loved Dara Whistman, the woman he married. It was for her he was building a home when he lifted a timber and fell to the ground never being able to walk again he lived but five days. That was my first experience with death of some one close to me that I loved. I was devastated, and my heart still feels the loss of this special person in my childhood.

     We lost touch with Aunt Dara. She went elsewhere to make a new life for herself.
                 Aunt Dara died, December 8, 1934.
