*  MY UNCLE JACK *

     To me, Uncle. Jack, was :someone special. I remember well the few times our family visited his home He lived in Lewis County, on Stone Coal Creek in a lovely big home. was fascinated by the grand hospitality extended us by the entire family.

     Uncle Jack showed us his big cattle, all red and white faced. Pure Hereford blood he told us. He had some beautiful horses also. Black with white stars on their faces and white stocking feet. Morgan, I believe. he called them. I always loved horses and I am sure that his horses were of the best stock .

     Aunt Sabra,  bless  her heart. had such a delicious dinner. It would be useless for me to attempt to do justice to that meal , and she set such a beautiful table.

     Uncle Jack always had such a merry twinkle in his eyes, you felt he loved entertaining you and was sure he loved you very much.

     That was my last visit to Uncle Jack’s home. I hope to remember it always with him still living.

     Uncle Jack died in August of 1943. A very vivid occurrence makes this date stay in my mind. This was the month and the year of a big flood. A flood which destroyed many homes and store buildings on Dusk Camp and elsewhere.

     The members of my family had attended the Funeral of Uncle Jack, we had traveled with Uncle Art and his family. Uncle Art being a half brother of Jack and my father, Austin. When returning home. we had such torrential down-pours of rain it seemed like the sky and all it’s heavens had burst open and would never close.

      The water was everywhere Creeks and rivers were out their banks and raging. Uncle Art took us as close to our home as he could and a neighbor. hitched his horses to a wagon and drove us home. The- sky was a constant flash of lightening and thunder never stopped. This seemed to rage all night long. The next day was a sight to behold. All the destruction of this mighty storm will never be forgotten. All of our family still talks of this incident, which happened on the day of Uncle Jack’s internment, August 2, 1943; fifty years ago.
