leg amputated. He is last listed on Confederate rolls as assigned to the
Surgeon at Staunton General Hospital Dec. 16,1864

George W. served as Pvt. Co. 1, 17th. Va. Infantry. George later lived in Braxton County, WV at Coon Creek. He cut a small birch tree which stood by the home, two of his children were in the yard, Thomas and Etta Ann in her cradle, Thomas rocking the craddle. The tree fell the wrong way across the craddle killing Etta Ann and injuring Thomas. Which left him with a badly deformed hand.
