Aunt “Carrie” was a mid-wife, I am sure no one
kept count of how many babies she was present for and assisted in their
birth. I was one back in 1939. She was highly regarded by her friends and
neighbors for miles around. Carrie and Oscar were life long residence in
Braxton County in the Gem, Heaters, Burns Run, Salt Lick District of West
Virginia. They were mebers of the Methodist Church. Interment, IOOF Cemetery,
Burnsville, WV.

Charles’s previous marriage was to Minnie
Pullman, Minnie died from severe burns received when she attempted to start
a fire using kerosine oil. Aunt Ellie became stepmother to four children:

Maude Lelah, Addie Lea, Gidd
Uncle Charlie was by trade a blacksmith and operated his shop in Burnsville, Braxton Co., WV.Later moved the shop to his home on Right Hand Forl, Braxton Co.
Sarah Ellen and Charlie’s children: Joseph Lee, Glady’s, Ruby, Maggie, Peggy, Patty Leo
Uncle Charlie died at his home one day after
Patty Leo’s birth.
The story goes: he was fatally wounded by gun
shot by police officers. Deputy Sheriff C.A. Duffield and Constable A.B.
Criner, W.S. Skidmore and L.H. Humphrey’s came to the house with a search
warrant looking for moonshine. He resisted arrest and the search warrant
he went to the house and got his gun to stop the search. In the exchange
of gun fire Duffield and Criner were hit, the two other officers came to
the back door, all four officers shot simultanously and continued to do
so until Charley feel to the floor dead. (Note: Re Newspaper article in
Braxton Democrat). It also stated that Charley was know to have a bad temper
and always ready for a fight. The new born baby, Patty Leo died shortly
afterward because of the percussion from the gun blasts so near her head.
There was no moonshine found upon the search at the time of the tragedy.
